Oh dear, what is it this time?Honestly, I have no clue. I've never shown an interest in photography, I don't own fancy equiptment, and I'm not a blogger, vlogger, or any other form of "life-tracker."
It's January 1st, and I just have this inkling that I should commit myself to taking a photo a day. Instead of a quintessential new year's resolution that would be long forgotten in about two weeks, I think I'd like to try and visually represent my year in photos! I'm not sure how this will go; I wonder if I'll stick to it, or if I've just wasted a website domain name and my project will get lost in the great abyss of the world wide web. I guess there is only one way to find out... |
Wait... but why? There are a number of justifications for starting a project like this one. First and foremost, I'd like to gain a better relationship with photography and pictures. Don't get me wrong, I'm not on a therapist's chaise dwelling on how pictures have tormented my childhood. But the recent uproar in social media outlets like Instagram and Snapchat has changed how people capture, percieve, and share images. A selfie. A breakfast. An outfit. A grande decaf white chocolate mocha frap with a double pump of pumpkin spice topped with an incorrectly spelled sharpie scribble set in subdued lighting.
It's not bad. It's not unartistic. I'm not being judgemental. I'm just recognizing that the way we take pictures is unlike anything humanity has done ever before. Back in the day, taking a picture was a formal and unique occassion. Here in 2017, photography is so accessible, almost expected, and occurs at a much higher rate and volume. I'm curious to see if my perception of photography changes as I alter my approach to taking a picture. |
So what? You think you're hot stuff now that you got yourself a photo a day challenge and a trendy website?Let us politely keep all of our passive aggressive comments to ourselves as I explain my expectations for this portfolio. Will this project achieve some kind of "insta"-worthy caliber? I 100% guarantee that my daily pictures will be comparable to what you get at the kodak kiosk after your fifth grade birthday bash. The answer is no way! Will every picture have some deep, valuable meaning behind them? Absolutely not! Nope. Sorry to dissappoint.
But another purpose of this project is give myself something to work on that has no rubric, no direction, no word count. I'm committing my time and energy to explore something new that is just for myself. It's all about the hustle nowadays, and I hope this pointless project will help me stay afloat! Plus, its not like anyone is going to see or read this anyways, so what do I have to lose? With the haters blocked and my iPhone fully charged, I'm ready to take on my year-long photography challenge. |
